Savvy Caregiver (6-week series)

An evidence based 6 week (2 hours each week) series that provides the non-professional caregiver with the knowledge, skills, tools and strategies to increase confidence and reduce the stress of caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s disease or other form of dementia. This series provides understanding of the progressive nature of the disease while teaching strategies for contented involvement, positivity, focusing on the moment and recognizing joy in each day.

Dates: 6 Consecutive Wednesdays, 10am – 12pm | 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 2/23

Week 1: Introduction to series, and participants. Understanding the purpose of the series, the role of the caregiver, overview of the dementias, the elements of thought, and strategies to work with changes.

Week 2: Recognizing stress, managing stress and associated feelings, learning about behavior and methods for caring for the caregiver. Exploring grief.

Week 3: Evaluating abilities, learning structure and support to facilitate independence in the person living with Alzheimer’s disease. Understanding the abilities and strategies will change with progression.

Week 4: Structure and support to provide contented involvement for the person living with Alzheimer’s disease. Living in the moments. Relinquishing expectations.

Week 5: Applying structure to daily life. Making important decisions through use of a decision making tool.

Week 6: Menu of opportunities, recipes for success, managing help from others, efficient health care visits. Presentation of certificates.
